The aim of the program:

The aim of Crisis and crisis intervention psychology with the elements of trauma psychology is to prepare student to professional work with the people who experience strong critical situations, psychic traumas and sudden unforeseen events, i.e. the loss of a closed one, accidents, acts of violence, disease, natural disaster or identity and existential crises.

The program develops the following competence:

  • diagnosis of the psychological crisis and post-traumatic reactions,
  • conduct of crisis intervention in variable contexts (individual and institutional),
  • support of the adaptation process, of the integration of traumatic experiences and formation of the mental resilience,
  • working in an interdisciplinary team, including psychotherapists, doctors, emergency services and social workers.

Advantages of the specialty:

  • Primary preparation for the work with the people in crisis: classes with experienced intervening force workers, psychotraumatologists, EMDR therapists and specialists in first contact intervention.
  • Personal and professional competence orientation: formation of the mental resilience, the ability to work under pressure, empathy development together with professional boundaries kept.
  • Possibility of further specialization, e.g. in psychotraumatology, trauma therapy, crisis intervention in public or humanitarian sector.

  • Psychology of the trauma – mechanisms and effects
  • Introduction to psychotraumatology and PTSD
  • Boundary situations and existential crises
  • Psychology of grief and life loss
  • Domestic violence and sexual violence – diagnosis and psychological help
  • Psychological help in case of disasters and mass incidents
  • Psychological First Aid

Supplementary subjects:

  • Regulation of emotions and stabilization in a crisis situation
  • Working with the body in a therapy of trauma (elements of somatic approach)
  • Developmental and complex trauma (C-PTSD)
  • Communication with the people in the situation of stress and disorientation
  • Ethics and boundaries of the intervening force worker
  • Apprenticeships in the crisis centers, foundations or hospitals

Teaching mode

Teaching modes: full-time and part-time mode

Part-time mode

You meet the lecturer and the group both, online and at the premises of the University. Meetings take place on weekends and selected Friday afternoons.

Full-time mode

Classes are mostly of in-person nature organized on weekdays. Typically they take place 3-4 days a week at the premises of the University and some part of the lectures is delivered on-line.

How can you study this major?

Hybrid learning

Part of the classes (mainly lectures) are delivered on the MS Teams platform, and majority of labs are based on-site in the lecture rooms.


The schedule includes days that are fully remote, but also days that all classes are held on-site.

This specialty is for those who:

  • want to support others in their moments of the greatest life difficulties,
  • are interested in crisis, grief and trauma psychology,
  • want to work in the institutions offering help or run an intervention-supporting practice,
  • can maintain an empathic distance and act in the situations of pressure and emotional tension.

What can our graduate do?

Graduates of Crisis and Crisis Intervention are specialists:

  • that are prepared to conduct psychological support in the sudden and destabilizing situations,
  • who can recognize the symptoms of post-traumatic disorders (PTSD, ASD, complicated grief),
  • who are competent in the use of short-term psychological intervention techniques,
  • who know the rules of working with people who experience violence, abuse or loss or are in the boundary situation,
  • who can mind their own boundaries, welfare and prevent the burnout when working with emotionally difficult cases.

Start of the specialty depends on the number of submissions, at least 25 people for each specialty. Chosen selection at the registration does not guarantee opening of the specialty.
